Homeowners can now receive a tax credit of up to $1500 for replacing their windows!

On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. As a result, there are some significant changes to the energy efficiency tax credit. The highlights of the new Stimulus Bill are:

The tax credits that were previously effective for 2009 only, have been extended through 2010.

The tax credit has been raised from 10% to 30% for qualifying products.

The tax credits that were for a specific dollar amounts, have been converted to 30% of the cost of the product only, exclusive of labor or installation cost.

The maximum credit for replacing old windows with new energy efficient ones has been raised from $200 to $1500 for the two years (2009 – 2010).

The old $200 credit on windows has been removed.

Products must be “placed in service” from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010.

Products must be for taxpayer’s principal residence.

Improvements made in 2009 will be claimed on a homeowner’s 2009 taxes, filed by April 15th, 2010. (Copies of receipts and the 4” x 6” temporary NFRC label should be kept.)
It is important that you know that not all Energy Star Rated products qualify for this credit. Requirement for this credit exceed Energy Star requirement. Regardless of the region of the country, a product is eligible if it is equal to or below a U-Factor of 0.30 and SHGC of 0.30.
